Take Action: Stop the Feds from Mainstreaming Marijuana

Late last month, the Pelosi-led U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAFE Banking Act (H.R. 1595) by a 2-to-1 margin. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration. Specifically, it will be sent to the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs – the committee on which our Senator Kevin Cramer sits.

Innocuous as it sounds, the SAFE Banking Act would financially legitimize the marijuana industry at the federal level. It would allow banking, real estate, and other businesses to receive federal legal protections even though they accept money from marijuana growers and distributors. This is legal protection for engaging with businesses that are in violation of Federal and North Dakota state laws where recreational marijuana is illegal.

Fundamentally, this comes down to whether we as a state want to help facilitate financial transactions for business that produces something which is a verified health risk. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recently issued a warning against e-cigarettes containing THC, the active ingredient in marijuana. This is in addition to documented cases of traffic fatalities and other disastrous impacts of marijuana usage.

Now is NOT the time to prop up a dangerous industry through massive financial investment.  This legislation is the antithesis of “SAFE.” That’s why your action is needed to ensure the so-called SAFE Banking Act is defeated in the Senate.

Please call and email Senator Cramer and respectfully request he withdraw his support from and vote against the SAFE Banking Act, S. 1200. You can send the message in just a few moments on our Action Center. Our Senators are also on break until October 15th, so if you happen to see them somewhere in the state such as a town hall meeting, please let them know you oppose the SAFE Banking Act.

Thanks for Speaking Up!
