Here are a few facts that may surprise you. North Dakota has:
- 47 members in the state Senate
- 94 members in the state House
- 527 registered lobbyists
That’s a lot of lobbyists!
The word “lobbyist” often has a negative connotation. I used to think of lobbyists as being somewhat shifty characters lurking in legislative corridors or making deals in smoke-filled rooms. I am now a lobbyist; my perspective has changed a bit.
Lobbyists essentially try to influence policy and decisions on behalf of a particular group of citizens, companies or organizations. That’s it. It’s no more ominous than any other person trying to influence the outcome of decisions in board rooms, county and city hearings, or local school-board meetings. I also came to realize the vast majority of lobbyists in North Dakota are hard-working and upstanding people.
So, if the issue is not whether someone is a lobbyist, and if most North Dakota lobbyists appear to be good folks, what’s the problem with 527 lobbyists?
It’s simple: Ask yourself how many of these 527 lobbyists are looking out for you in Bismarck? For your church? For your family? Make no mistake, entities on the Left like the ACLU and Planned Parenthood have lobbyists in Bismarck every day. What those lobbyists are advocating is troubling. Making sure our message is heard is the real challenge
That’s why it’s so important Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota is there, lobbying for you.
In case you were wondering, lobbying activity does not end when the Legislature adjourns. Informal lobbying occurs throughout the year, in one-on-one meetings with legislators and other decision-makers in their hometowns, at events, and at other venues between sessions.
It really comes down to this. Do you want an advocate in North Dakota policy decisions that represents your values, or do you want to let the ACLU and Planned Parenthood be the voice your legislators hear?
In a quote sometimes attributed to the great theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
Please know that we must speak and act! Thank you for helping us do just that by continuing to support us through your prayers, responding to our action alerts, and giving faithfully to our ministry. We promise to continue representing your pro-family and pro-life values by speaking up and taking action, regardless of how many other lobbyists the opposition throws into the mix.
