Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota’s vision for our state is one where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive, and life is cherished. This week’s email is the first of a four-part series dedicated to highlighting each element of this vision, explaining how Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota is helping to fulfill this vision, and discussing your role in this process. Today we examine the first part of our vision – a North Dakota where God is honored.
John Adams, one of our country’s founding fathers, stated, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Similarly, in George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, he stated. “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor…”.
John Adams and George Washington got it right. They acknowledged God’s sovereign control over the fate of people and nations, and affirmed a personal dependency on God for divine blessings and success. If we look at other of our nation’s founding documents and state constitutions, there are many similar declarations and acknowledgments of a solemn recognition of God’s existence and authority in our lives. Our own North Dakota constitution begins, “We, the people of North Dakota, grateful to Almighty God for the blessings of civil and religious liberty, do ordain and establish this constitution.”
Imagine for a moment if all our modern-day officials were motivated by these same truths and were inspired to pursue only those policies that would honor God. How might this change the direction of North Dakota? How might it change the very fabric of our society?
North Dakota is blessed to be a state that has traditionally recognized the role of God in our affairs, both in our private and public lives. However, this can sometimes lead to complacency, and before we know it, we’ve lost our way. It is very easy to allow our traditions, cultures and values to be seized by those who disavow God’s existence and/or authority, and who seek to expel any remnant of God-honoring principles from our government, our schools, and even our homes. Yes, even in North Dakota, there are those whose mission is to undermine our vision of a state where God is honored.
At Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota, we are actively working to honor God by exercising our responsibility as the people of God to “stand firm and take action” (Daniel 11:32); to engage our culture, business community, churches, and government; and to stand up for the biblical values we share. We call this “unleashing biblical citizenship” and we encourage you to become part of this movement of change!
