The final piece in a 4-part series called “Protecting Life & Ending Abortion”
By John Paul, Mobilization Manager
For 45 years, we’ve heard the pro-abortion mantra that Roe v. Wade is “settled law.” But thankfully, as this series of articles has been making clear, the Court doesn’t get the final say.
And for 45 years, pro-lifers have been having their say – chipping away at Roe in a thousand different ways:
- We’ve been rescuing would-be abortion victims (both mothers and babies) through crisis pregnancy centers and abortion-mill prayer vigils.
- We’ve been educating the public through roadside billboards and bumper stickers – reminding travelers that “abortion stops a beating heart.”
- And we’ve helped pass hundreds of new state laws that limit when, where and how abortion can be perpetrated.
All of those efforts have been fruitful. They have saved hundreds of thousands – probably millions – of lives. And they have helped make the current generation the most pro-life generation since the imposition of Roe.
But still.
Still, a million American babies are killed each year by abortion. That’s down 30 percent from the peak in 1990, but it’s still a million lives a year. And since Roe, the total lives lost from abortion is approximately 60 million.
For 45 years, we have rightly commemorated the tragedy of Roe with marches and more. But it’s time to put an end to Roe – before it turns 50.
So, please join with Family Policy Alliance to make sure Roe v. Wade doesn’t live to see 50. In other words, let’s do all we can to finish it off before its 50th anniversary in 2023.
That work starts right now – in the critical 2018 elections.
While some have grown weary of politics and elections, they remain critically important and have been key to many of the pro-life advances:
- Most of the great pro-life laws that have been passed in the states have happened as the result of a determined political effort. For example, in 2010, Family Policy Alliance and our Indiana ally, Indiana Family Action, targeted a host of state House seats, won most of them, and paved the way for passage of a major, multi-faceted pro-life bill that is still saving lives today.
.
And we did the same thing in Kentucky in 2016 – winning 7 of 9 races, giving pro-lifers control of the legislature – resulting in big pro-life advances in 2017.
. - In 2014, Family Policy Alliance focused on U.S. Senate races – targeting six pro-abortion incumbents. The support of people like you enabled more than 17 million election messages to be sent to pro-life voters in those states, boosting turnout significantly, helping five of the six be defeated and replaced with pro-life senators.
. - Those 2014 elections, combined with the election of President Trump in 2016, allowed for the nomination and confirmation of a Supreme Court justice (Neil Gorsuch) whose opposition to judicial activism bodes well for his rulings on life.
At any moment, President Trump could have the opportunity – particularly with several aging Supreme Court justices – to nominate a new justice who could be transformational, particularly when it comes to the Court’s stance on life.
And that’s what makes the 2018 elections so critical. With control of the U.S. Senate very much at stake in 2018, the ability to confirm a pro-life justice is resting on a knife’s edge and could go either way.
Please renew your commitment for life today by standing with Family Policy Alliance in this critical election year. Let’s not let Roe live to 50. Enough lives have been lost—ending Roe v. Wade by 2023 starts NOW by preparing for this year’s election.
