ICYMI: “Democrats Abandon Catholics” & “Republicans Betray Pro-Life Conservatives”

Dear Friends:

In case you missed it, the abortion debate was back in national headlines again last week and, interestingly enough, it was both major political parties taking heat on the issue!

“Democrats Abandon Catholics.” In a brief, yet thought-provoking Wall Street Journal editorial, Cardinal Timothy Dolan (Archbishop of New York) accused the Democratic Party of abandoning Catholics and pointed to the party’s growing hostility toward religious education and the sanctity of human life. In Cardinal Dolan’s words: “…the needs of poor and middle-class children in Catholic schools, and the right to life of the baby in the womb—largely have been rejected by the party of our youth. An esteemed pro-life Democrat in Illinois, Rep. Dan Lipinski, effectively was blacklisted by his own party. Last year, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez insisted that pro-life candidates have no place in the modern Democratic Party.” Cardinal Dolan concluded the article lamenting the fact that “the party that once embraced Catholics now slams the door on us.”

“Republicans Betray Pro-Life Conservatives.” In an extremely disappointing move, the Republican-controlled Congress passed the $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill, which included continued funding for Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider. Planned Parenthood receives approximately $500 million in taxpayer subsidies each year and performs more than 300,000 abortions annually. In a statement explaining his vote against the omnibus spending bill, U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) stated: “I voted against this deficit-spending bill because I believe our promises to change Washington matter. Even in such an enormous bill that combines so many different things, Congress somehow still failed to deliver for President Trump on issues important to grassroots Americans, including…stopping forced taxpayer support of Planned Parenthood.”

Friends – I agree with Senator Paul. Promises matter and continuing to fund the abortion giant Planned Parenthood, represents a broken promise made by the Republican leadership. I also agree with Cardinal Dolan. To those of us who stand for life, the Democratic Party has made it clear that we are no longer welcome.

There is, however, some good news for people of faith. We can change this developing track record of abandonment and betrayal because we have a VOICE and we have a VOTE! This year, it is our hope that you will join us in speaking up for the biblical values we hold and voting for those candidates who will faithfully support and defend those values, regardless of party politics or pressures.

We believe two things are desperately needed in New Mexico and across our nation – greater accountability during the election and greater accountability after the election. You see, it is not enough to simply elect the right person. We must also hold that person accountable to make the right decisions after they are elected.

In this effort, Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico is proud to serve as a dependable resource, and since we are not beholden to any political party, you can always trust us to keep all parties, officials, and candidates accountable on the issues that matter most to you and your family.

On that note, please stay tuned for some important information in the weeks to come!

In the meantime, God bless you and have a great week!

President and Executive Director
