Today, the U.S. Senate advanced the Kavanaugh nomination to final passage, which is expected to happen tomorrow.
The 51-49 vote was on a standard procedure to limit floor debate to 30 hours. Passage today was essential and is an encouraging sign that Kavanaugh will be confirmed, but it is no guarantee. Senators can and sometimes do change their vote on final passage. All eyes are particularly on Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who voted no. Encouragingly, two swing senators, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), just announced on the Senate floor that they plan to vote for Kavanaugh.
In addition, Sen. Steve Daines, a Republican who supports confirmation, will be in his home state of Montana for his daughter’s wedding, but plans to take a private jet to D.C. immediately after the wedding to vote for Kavanaugh if needed. The vote would be held open to allow him to cast his vote.
For Americans who care about this critical nomination, there is plenty to be done. Above all, that starts with prayer – both for the nomination and for God’s mercy and healing for our bitterly divided nation.
