Last week, Senator Robert Menendez (D) and Senator Cory Booker (D) unconscionably voted against the federal Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act (S.311). This legislation would have simply required physicians to provide the same degree of medical care for living babies who survived an attempted abortion as any other child born alive at the same gestational age. The original Born-Alive Infants Protection Act of 2002 extended legal protection to babies who remained alive after a failed abortion but failed to adequately hold physicians accountable if they refused to provide the required care. Tragically, according to eyewitness testimony heard in committee hearings, some doctors did deny lifesaving care to newborn infants! Predictably, a law without consequences becomes a guideline, an industry “best practice,” or merely a suggestion.
Senators Menendez and Booker also voted against the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This legislation would have prohibited abortions at 20 weeks, the point the child feels the pain of the procedure. Did you know 96% of nations do not allow abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy? Unfortunately, instead of America moving forward into the 21st century in regard to human rights, our senators decided to align themselves with nations such as China and North Korea that continue to allow abortions without restrictions.
I have said it before, and I must say it again – if preborn life and now post birth babies, are unsafe and unprotected, the government has failed us!
You have the incredible opportunity to make your voice be heard on Friday, March 6. The statewide pro-life coalition has marked this day for prayer, fasting and calling our legislative officials that serve in Trenton. Since our federal Senators failed to uphold basic human rights for babies, we must urge our state elected officials to protect the vulnerable and indefensible children of NJ by supporting the following:
- New Jersey Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (Senate bill S462 and Assembly bill A152)
- Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act (Senate bill S429 and Assembly bill A2228
You can find your legislator at our website. Select the New Jersey tab next to the Federal tab. This will give you the contact information for your one state senator and your two assembly members.
Here is a sample message you can leave with your legislators:
