
The news hit Wyoming like a bombshell last month when a Torrington lawyer successfully argued that a mother is not a mother until her baby is born. Tied into his reasoning was the argument that children are not people if they are still inside the womb.
Last August, Community Hospital in Torrington notified Wyoming Department of Family Services that a baby delivered by a Barbara Stewart of Torrington, showed clear signs of methamphetamine withdrawal. This is a serious offense and is usually prosecuted as Child Endangerment.
Yet, last month, the charges of felony child abuse and delivery of methamphetamine to a minor were dropped when Miss Stewart’s lawyer persuaded a judge that his client was not a mother because when she ingested methamphetamine, her baby was not yet a person.
As the newborn was rushed into Intensive Care we are left wondering, “If we can clearly see this little life suffering from symptoms of drug use now, wasn’t it a life inside the womb when it was dosed with drugs in the first place?”
Sadly, the lawyer argued that the baby was not a person, it was “just” a fetus. This clearly implies, “It’s no big deal, it’s not a human yet.” Anyone should clearly recognize that dosing a baby with methamphetamines is a terrible crime but this baby, suffering from drug abuse, fell prey to an ideology that sees her as valueless.
The only common-sense answer must be that a baby is a person inside and outside of the womb and that an expectant mother is certainly a mother. This is an understanding that sees life as valuable and worth protecting.

The filing period for candidates for the Wyoming Legislature ends tomorrow. Family Policy Alliance of Wyoming will be working to encourage candidates who will fight for babies because they understand the purpose clause of government found in the Declaration of Independence.
