An Overreach of City Council Power…

August 18

Dear Friends,

My heart is broken over the outcome of Monday’s Albuquerque City Council meeting. Despite our best efforts, the resolution to divert the Planned Parenthood sponsorship was voted down, and a new amendment was accepted in its place. The new amendment reaffirmed the $250,000 sponsorship to Planned Parenthood, added $100,000 to Prosperity Works and $100,000 to the Barrett House.

While we are thankful for the money directed toward the Barrett House, we are saddened to see our tax dollars still supporting a billion-dollar, private organization whose services greatly offend the consciences of so many New Mexicans.

The accepted amendment that secured the sponsorship and increased the amount of funds being pulled from Albuquerque’s reserve funds was sponsored by Tammy Fiebelkorn, the sponsor of the original bill. To our surprise, conservative councilor Trudy Jones, co-sponsored this amendment with Councilor Fiebelkorn.

During Councilor Fiebelkorn’s speech regarding the sponsorship of Planned Parenthood she stated, “I am pro-choice. I am a supporter of Planned Parenthood, and I’m upset that it can’t be more than $250,000.” Throughout her speech it became clear that Councilor Fiebelkorn is using Albuquerque’s taxpayer dollars to support a political statement that she is trying to make in the wake of the overturning of Roe. Unfortunately, conservative New Mexicans will have to pay the price of that political statement as their tax dollars will continue to be directed to Planned Parenthood.

Councilors Fiebelkorn and Jones committed a great overreach and abuse of council powers when they allocated tax dollars to make their personal statement of support through an avenue that tinkers along the line of being unconstitutional, according to the anti-donations clause in the New Mexico Constitution. We will continue to pursue justice in this situation and protect conservative values to the best of our ability.

One thought has stuck with me this week in the wake of Monday’s outcome. For all those that choose to stand up and fight for life in New Mexico, do not be disheartened. We had an amazing show of support from the pro-life community as speaker after speaker stood and addressed the council urging the end of the Planned Parenthood sponsorship. Each speaker was clearly full of compassion towards mothers and our pre-born and showed a strong and powerful testimony of the Creator of life. It is our compassion and our drive to help mothers and preborn children that can affect the hearts and minds of New Mexicans.

I consider all those who have fought before us for the overturning of Roe. Throughout the last 40 years people have stood boldly for life, never dreaming that we would ever see the day when Roe was overturned. But here we are. Without their fight, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Without our fight in New Mexico today, our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will not have the foundation for the victory that they may one day see realized.

“Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.” 2 Samuel 10:12

Standing Firm,
