New Mexico House Passes Radical Abortion Bill;
Prioritizes Abortion Industry Over Women, Children, and Doctors

SANTA FE –Tonight, the New Mexico House of Representatives passed HB 51, the most radical abortion bill in the country. In spite of bipartisan opposition from Republicans and Democrats, the bill advanced on a 40 to 29 vote.

Contrary to testimony provided by the bill’s sponsors, HB 51 would have serious, negative impacts on New Mexico’s women, children, and doctors. HB 51 strips away even the most basic protections for women, including requiring a woman’s consent and that abortions be performed by licensed physicians. The bill also leaves children at risk by excluding parents from their children’s medical care and would force doctors to participate in abortions up to birth, regardless of the doctor’s conscience objections.

Stephanie Curry, Policy Manager for Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico, provided the following statement:

“The intent of this bill is clear—protect the abortion industry at all costs. HB 51 forces women to shoulder all the risks in an abortion procedure, even if the abortionists violate basic standards of care. Why should abortion be the exception to quality standards of care?

“Women are not the only ones who will pay the price for HB 51. Should doctors face criminal penalties because they believe abortion is morally wrong or not in the best interests of their patients? The Representatives who voted for this bill must think so. Should sex traffickers and abortionists get more protection under the law than children? Again, the Representatives who voted for this bill must think so.

“HB 51 is out of step with New Mexico’s culture and tradition of valuing children. We call on the Senate to put the interests of New Mexico’s women, children, and doctors above this radical abortion agenda by voting HB 51 down.”
