Tell Colleges to Protect Free Speech!

Dear Members of the American Council on Education,

We, the undersigned, respectfully address the American Council on Education (ACE), the nation’s leading association for higher education institutions, to advocate for the robust protection and promotion of free speech within American universities and colleges. As an institution committed to advancing knowledge, fostering intellectual growth, and preparing students for the diverse challenges of the 21st century, it is crucial that ACE take a stand to protect free speech, academic freedom, and the exchange of ideas across all campuses.

In recent years, there has been growing concern over the limitations placed on free expression within higher education.

One such example of an unprecedented attack on free speech is the experience of Riley Gaines, who was held hostage at her event held in April 2023 at SF State University. Following Gaines’ speech, she was met by a mob of violent protesters who stormed into the room, turned off the lights, rushed to the podium where she was standing and assaulted her before holding her hostage. This does not reflect the kind of free speech protection that should be present in the US.

Furthermore, a recent study reports that near 70% of conservative students fear social repercussions for expressing their views.*

We urge the American Council on Education to consider the following points and take actionable steps to protect free speech in the academic environment:

  1. Reaffirm the Core Principle of Free Expression
  2. Oppose Censorship and “Speech Codes”
  3. Promote Open Dialogue and Civil Discourse
  4. Support Academic Freedom for Faculty and Students
  5. Ensure Transparency in Policy Implementation
  6. Collaboration with Legal Experts

We believe that by upholding free speech, academic freedom, and the rights of individuals to express diverse viewpoints, ACE can help ensure that American higher education remains a dynamic and inclusive space for learning, growth, and the exchange of ideas.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. We look forward to your leadership in ensuring that free speech remains protected on campuses throughout the United States.

Sincerely,
