Tell Pharmacies to Stop Providing Abortion!

Dear Chief Executive Officer, 

Thank you for serving our states and communities day in and day out with necessary and life-saving medications. Your services are indispensable to our community and lives. 
 
You may be aware that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, the abortion pill, mifepristone, will be allowed to be dispensed at retail pharmacies. I am writing to you to urge you to refuse, or cease, applying for this FDA program to dispense Mifeprex and its generic mifepristone tablets. These are dangerous drugs that jeopardize the health and safety of women and, in all cases, end the life of a developing, unborn child. It is also concerning for individual pharmacists that have strongly-held beliefs against dispensing these pills at retail pharmacies that agree to FDA’s terms. 
 
A few statistics on the dangers of these pills include: 
 
·       According to the FDA, two to seven women out of 100 have to return to a medical facility for a surgical procedure when the pills are unsuccessful. 
·       As of June 2022, there were 28 reported maternal deaths and over 4,200 reported adverse effects, including hemorrhaging and infections.[1] 
·       Research has shown that abortion pills put women at four times the heightened physical risk compared to a surgical abortion, not to mention the associated mental health risks.[2] 
·       Women who use abortion pills are 50 percent more likely to visit an ER than with a surgical abortion, and as many as one out of five women will suffer a complication.[3] 
 
By removing the in-person requirement for monitoring and distribution, this only further undermines the medical needs of women seeking care during a critical time in their life as well as opens the door for women to be coerced into having an abortion. Women should not be told these abortion pills are safe, especially in light of limited interactions with community care providers. Last year alone, nearly half of the states acted quickly to limit these chemical abortions. 
 
Again, I urge you to refuse to dispense these dangerous abortion pills. Thank you for your consideration on this pressing matter and for your service to the community.
