Jaime Harrison Would Sideline Our Girls: New Ad Targets Senate Race with Message About Girls’ Sports

The Family Policy Alliance ad warns that Harrison would support policies allowing males to compete in female sports categories

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – Family Policy Alliance – a pro-family ministry – this week released a new ad targeting the contentious Harrison/Graham Senate race, as well as the presidential election. The ad calls out the Democratic candidates’ support for policies that would allow males to compete in female sports categories. In doing so, says the ad, they would “sideline our girls.”

In the 15-second version of the ad, a female voice says, “Female athletes dream big and work hard. Competition brings out the best in us. But Jaime Harrison and Joe Biden are working with LGBT activists to sideline our girls and allow boys to compete in girls’ sports. It doesn’t make sense. You can stop them.”

The ad’s claims are well-founded. Former Vice President Joe Biden is clear about his stance on his campaign website, which promises to “restore transgender students’ access to sports”. And Jaime Harrison is endorsed by the Human Rights Campaign, which cited Harrison’s commitment “to co-sponsoring and voting for the Equality Act if elected” in its endorsement announcement. The Equality Act is a Congressional proposal that would redefine sex to include gender identity in federal nondiscrimination law.

What does that have to do with girls’ sports? By changing the definition of “sex” within federal nondiscrimination law, the Equality Act would allow males who identify as female to participate in female sports divisions.

But as the ad points out, “It doesn’t make sense.” Males often have significant physiological advantages over females, such as greater bone density, muscle mass, and cardiovascular capacity. When allowed to compete against females, they often dominate – sidelining even talented female athletes in their own (female) sports competitions. Where individual policies already allow males in female sports, girls have lost championships, scholarships, and other elite opportunities to males competing as females.

Trump’s Administration has found certain policies like that to be in violation of Title IX, a law which prevents sex discrimination in federally-funded education programs, including sports. The Department of Education wrote to Family Policy Alliance that, “Title IX regulations authorize single-sex sports teams” and that “where separating students based on sex is permissible—for example, with respect to sex-specific sports teams—such separation must be based on biological sex.”

Family Policy Alliance is targeting its ads to registered, active voters who have not yet voted in the 2020 General Election, strongly support the GOP Senate candidate, and are only somewhat likely (or unlikely) to vote in the election. It has also released similar ads in contentious Senate races in Montana and Georgia.

Family Policy Alliance hopes that the ads will help motivate conservative voters who understand the significance of the issues at stake.
