Trump Executive Order to Save Girls Sports

For the second time in two weeks, President Donald Trump has taken executive action to bring clarity to major cultural issues.

President Trump today announced the signing of an executive order that will mandate that men cannot participate in women’s and girls’ sports teams. It requires a government-wide recognition that girls’ sports teams, locker rooms and private spaces are for women and girls only and shall not be compromised in accordance with the original meaning of Title IX.

The order states that various departments within the federal government, most notably the Department of Education, must immediately re-evaluate all policies and procedures to interpret Title IX to accord with its original intentional to protect rights and opportunities of real women.

The order reinforces this new stance by requiring all public schools and other educational entities receiving federal aid to update their policies to protect girls’ and women’s sports as well as bathrooms, locker rooms and other private spaces or risk losing vital education funding.

Today’s order falls on the heels of two other important moves in recent days. On January 28th, the president implemented a federal ban on transgender procedures for children, effectively placing Help Not Harm rules in place for the federal government.

On January 31st, the Department of Education announced that it was abandoning a Biden-era policy that sought to eviscerate Title IX protections intended for women’s sports and other important education opportunities.

Today’s action marks another in a growing line of significant shifts in federal policy, reaffirming legal protections based on biological sex distinctions.

FPA President and CEO, Craig DeRoche noted: “Today’s move, along with the previous actions, represents a move back to common sense in America. Across the nation people have rejected the intentional blurring of sex and gender and the politics that came with it. Thankfully we are returning to a biblical understanding of male and female at the federal level of government.”

The executive order today, along with the others noted here, represents numerous victories for Family Policy Alliance which has, since 2017, spearheaded efforts to successfully enact Save Girls Sports and Help Not Harm legislation in 24 and 23 states respectively.
