There is good news out of Washington today — in Congress, to be exact.  Yes, you heard me correctly!  Today at 1 p.m. ET, House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), bill sponsor Rep. Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) and the Pro-Life Caucus will host a hearing on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

This “minority hearing” is a rare occurrence on Capitol Hill.  Whip Scalise has taken the initiative to hold a hearing with four expert witnesses to accurately demonstrate why legislation is necessary to provide life-saving care to infants born alive during abortions and end infanticide.  More than 30 pro-life Members of Congress are scheduled to participate.  You can watch the hearing live here.

While many opposed to life would like us to believe that infants never survive abortion, we know that is not the case.  According to state health data, at least 40 babies were born alive during abortion attempts in three states since 2016.  Unfortunately, those states — Arizona, Florida and Minnesota — plus four more which require statistics but have yet to report any — are the only states in the nation now tracking infants born alive during abortion.

The fact of the matter is, we know that some infants survive abortion attempts.  In fact, one witness at today’s hearing — former RN Jill Stanek — will describe her eye-witness account to babies left to die after surviving abortions in an Illinois hospital.

Because we know infants can and do survive abortions, we must ensure they are protected by law.

The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, H.R. 962, will prohibit infanticide.  The bill simply requires that a baby born during an abortion attempt receive the same medical care as any other newborn.  It’s common-sense and the only humane response to born-alive abortions.  Any newborn — wanted or not — has a right to medical care to preserve their life.

When nearly half of all states lack protection for born-alive infants, and several states (New York, Virginia, Illinois and Vermont) have moved recently to legalize late-term abortions and repeal born-alive laws, the time to act is now.

Unfortunately, House Democrats led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) have blocked a vote on this common-sense legislation 81 times.  This action is nothing less than an obstruction of justice for life!

Whip Scalise and Rep. Wagner filed a discharge petition on the Born-Alive Act to force a vote in April, but they are still 17 signatures shy of the necessary 218 to force a vote on this life-saving legislation.  To date, two Democrats have joined all 197 Republicans to sign the petition.  House members who have signed are listed here.

If your representative hasn’t yet signed the petition, please send a message asking them to sign the discharge petition for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act today. It only takes a few seconds in our action center.

Your representative needs to hear from you on this matter.  Let them know that you want the law to require that we protect the most vulnerable in our nation and end the obstruction of justice for life.

With you for life,

Autumn Leva
Vice President for Strategy

Friends,

Our allies at the Montana Family Foundation have alerted us that your quick action is needed on an important pro-life matter.

Senate Bill 354 (the Born Alive Infants Protection Act) was passed by both houses of the Montana legislature and has been transmitted to Gov. Steve Bullock for his signature. This bill would move the antiquated Montana infanticide ban into the 21st century.

The bill addresses and updates several issues in the current law that were not foreseen when it was originally passed years ago. Primarily, it places a penalty into the law for failing to render medical care to an infant surviving a botched abortion.

This is important to note because our Montana Family Foundation allies report that the bill is in danger of being vetoed because the governor claims it is redundant.

Please call Gov. Bullock at (406) 444-3111 and urge him to sign SB 354 because it will ensure that any infant born alive after a failed abortion must receive medical care.  He’s getting enormous pressure from Planned Parenthood and the ACLU to veto the bill.

Encourage him to do the right thing because, regardless of the circumstances, any infant born alive deserves protection and a chance to live.  SB 354 – the Born Alive Infant Protection Act – does just that.

Time is of the essence, so please call right now – (406) 444-3111.

Thank you!

The Family Policy Alliance team

While it seemed an odd question at the time a few weeks ago, with every passing day, it becomes clearer why this is an important matter. Because current law is no longer adequate in preserving the right to medical care for any infant who survives an abortion attempt, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Act was introduced in Congress earlier this year.

This whole concept begs a few gut-wrenching questions:

Who would ever consider NOT rendering aid to an infant who happened to live past an abortion attempt? Why would we even have to consider the need for such a national law? Why is this issue so important now and what can we do about it?

The reason the Born Alive Abortion Survivor Protection Act has become such an important issue is because states like New York have already enacted (and others are considering) radical new laws regarding abortion. These new laws eliminate any existing pro-life protections in state law and would allow abortion up to the moment of birth. As unthinkable as it sounds, late-term abortions can fail and do result in live births.

Unbelievably, some, including the Governor of Virginia, have stated that the decision to provide medical care to such a survivor would be left up to the mother and her doctor. Picture it – a baby has survived an abortion attempt, is probably wounded, cold and in need of care – some would have the cold-hearted nerve to decline that needed care. Rather than being an ethically guided decision it is reduced to a matter of convenience.

The inhumane logic is that since the baby was to have died in the abortion anyway, the fact that it survived is irrelevant and unless the mother wants to help, the child can be allowed to perish.

The Born Alive Survivor Protection Act would mandate all appropriate medical care for any infant born alive after a botched abortion. It just makes sense. In rather typical fashion however, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat leadership of the US House of Representatives have blocked consideration of the Born Live Survivors Protection Act over thirty times this year.

Because the bill has been blocked from consideration, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO), have implemented a seldom-used mechanism called a discharge petition to bring the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act to a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives at long last.

A Discharge Petition is really quite simple – as soon as a majority of members of the US House of Representatives (218 members) sign the petition, the matter must be brought to the floor for a vote. The discharge petition for the Born Alive bill was filed on April 2nd and currently has 199 signors meaning — it needs only 19 more to force a vote on the floor.

So where does your member stand? If you scroll down in this message, you will find a list of every single member of Congress – in front of their name is either a Red X or a Green Checkmark. The list is sorted by state so you can easily find your Representative*. If they have a Green Checkmark – they have signed the petition and are, thankfully, standing against infanticide.

If, however your member has a Red X, they have not taken a stand against infanticide and they need to hear from you. Please take a moment now to send your Representative a message – ask them to sign the discharge petition. We have made it easy through our Action Center and you can send your message in just a few seconds.

Thank you for being on top of this issue – we need your help! Please take action now!

* If you do not know who your Representative is, you can enter your address in our action center and find out – then come back here to see where they stand on infanticide.

It seems like an odd question to ask – surely anyone would be against infanticide, right??

Turns out, some in Congress have tried to vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act nearly 30 times this year alone. Each time, Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has blocked the entire House of Representatives from voting on it.

The Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (HR962) simply requires that any infant that survives an abortion should be given proper, life-saving medical care. As astounding as it sounds, such care is not required by law and does not necessarily happen.

While it is rare, babies do survive late-term abortions. And while most states do not report on these instances, five states do (Florida, Michigan, Arizona, Minnesota and Oklahoma). In these states alone, 25 babies survived abortion attempts in 2017. In other states, it is possible that as many (and more) survive attempted abortions.

Sadly, when a baby who was supposed to die in a late-term abortion does miraculously survive, there is often no effort to care for them or give them medical attention. Presumed to be “unwanted” in the first place, these babies are left on the abortion room table to die from neglect, are placed in closets until they bleed or starve to death or are killed by other means. It’s a terrible, horrific scar on the character of our nation.

If the scourge or abortion was not bad enough already, to further devalue life by refusing any care to a newborn is perhaps as appalling as human nature can possibly be.

Because the Democrat leadership of the US House of Representatives refuses to allow a vote on HB962, the House Republican leadership has decided to take charge by introducing a discharge petition for the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act – a seldom-used option to force a vote on legislation in Congress.

Today, Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), House Minority Whip, along with Rep. Ann Wagner (R-MO) are asking their Congressional colleagues to sign the discharge petition to bring this bill to a vote. The discharge petition requires the signatures of at least 218 Members of Congress in order to force a vote on the Floor of the House.

We need your help! In order to end the killing of abortion survivors, please send a message to your Representative asking them to sign the discharge petition for the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. It only takes a few seconds in our Action Center.

Your Representative needs to hear from you on this matter – let them know that you want the law to require that we protect the most helpless of the helpless in our nation.

So, where does your Representative stand on infanticide? Whether they sign the discharge petition or not will tell you what you need to know.

Yours for life,

Planned Parenthood’s current flash ad campaign is chilling in its irony.

“Planned Parenthood Needs You. This is the fight of our lives. Donate Today”

We who oppose the mass extermination of our babies know, and have always known, we are in the fight of our lives. When we look back and see we’ve lost over 60 million babies, in just fifty years, we feel with profound intensity that we are in the fight of our lives. It is the fight to save our children. The fight to save our generation. And the next one. And the next one.

We also know it is our children who need us. It is our children who need their mothers to fight for them. So, exactly how has Planned Parenthood successfully convinced millions of mothers their child doesn’t need them—but Planned Parenthood does?

Planned Parenthood is a $1.46 billion corporation. A corporation is not a mother. A corporation does not have a heartbeat. A corporation does not feel. It cannot grieve the children whose lives were ended inside its doors.

A mother’s desire to protect her child is so strong, the instinct response in her brain is a scientifically observable fact. So, Planned Parenthood had two choices: it could silence the most powerful potential opposition to its mission (mothers), or it could get them on its side.

Planned Parenthood chose to get mothers on its side. It has worked over 100 years to overcome the deep and instinctual desire of women to fight for life.  That’s why this campaign message might resonate with some women. “This is the fight of our lives.” It is an impressive statement, though sinister in its truth.

Planned Parenthood can’t crush the instinct of mothers to fight for life. But it can hijack that instinct and convince mothers they are fighting for lives—their own. (“This is the fight of our lives.”)

Planned Parenthood can lie to them, over and over for a century, that there is no child to grieve, and therefore no life at stake. Except the mothers’ lives, of course. Yet, these mothers aren’t fighting for their lives at all. Planned Parenthood is really calling upon mothers to fight for the right of a corporation to take the lives of their very own children…in exchange for money. Planned Parenthood doesn’t fight for life. It never has. It never will. It doesn’t want you to either.

God warns His people about those “who call evil good, and good evil; who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness. . . .[who] take away the rights of the ones who are in the right!” (Isaiah 5:20-23(NASB)). God declares He will raise a standard against those who do evil, bringing the righteous together, in His name, to oppose the darkness, bring light, and restore rights!

Family Policy Alliance stands firmly against the spreading darkness of Planned Parenthood. We ask that you stand with us, to restore the most basic right of our children –the right to life. Today, you can stand for the right to life by clicking here and signing this petition, urging your Congressional representative to take one more step away from darkness by voting yes on the federal 20-Week Abortion Ban.

Stand with us to restore the proper positions of mothers –protectors of life. Sign the petition urging your Congressional representative to protect babies who are Born Alive. We must fight to protect this generation. Take action today, because this is indeed the fight of our lives.

SIGN THE LETTER to Congress, asking them to ban abortions after 20 weeks, the point by which preborn babies can feel pain.

SIGN THE LETTER to your U.S. Representative, asking him or her to stop infanticide by protecting babies born alive after botched abortions.

Fighting for Life with You,

Last night on the floor of the U.S. Senate, infanticide was up for a vote.

Specifically, senators had the chance to outlaw the practice of killing babies that survive abortion attempts – a practice that has been in the news lately, even garnering a very public defense from the governor of Virginia.

A bipartisan group of 53 senators voted to outlaw infanticide. That included every Republican who voted, plus three Democrats: Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Doug Jones of Alabama.

But 44 Democrat senators voted to protect the grisly and heartless practice of killing babies who are taking their first breaths of fresh air. That was more than enough to kill the bill, which needed 60 votes to break the Democrat filibuster.

Now, the question is whether voters – whom polls show have become increasingly pro-life in reaction to extreme pro-abortion policies – will remember.

Family Policy Alliance will be reminding voters in race after race that elections matter when it comes to life-and-death issues like infanticide.

But we’ll also be reminding them of some good news on that front. Just days ago, President Trump finalized a Title X rule that is expected to cut $50 to $60 million of taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood.

Family Policy Alliance supporters played a role in this victory, as thousands of you sent messages to President Trump and HHS Secretary Alex Azar, urging that they take this action.

The rule requires that, in order to receive funding, family planning clinics must be housed in separate buildings from abortion operations. As the nation’s leading abortionist, Planned Parenthood can’t meet that standard.

Yes, elections matter, for bad and for good. But voters forget and need reminding. Please continue to stand with Family Policy Alliance as we hold the politicians accountable – and make sure that the voters remember.

To support our efforts to hold politicians accountable, remind voters of how their elected leaders voted on prolife issues, and advance prolife policies in DC and states across the country, please consider a gift to Family Policy Alliance.

Sincerely,

John Paulton
Mobilization Manager

A Revolutionary Faith

New York passed its extreme law legalizing abortion up till birth—and even stripping away basic medical care for babies born alive following botched abortions. Virginia tried to follow suit with a similar law—with full support from Governor Northam whose now infamous remarks in support of infanticide echo eerily across the media. And now Vermont is considering an even more extreme abortion law that would create an absolute right to abortion at any time in the pregnancy, for any reason, by any method.

Liberals in Congress aren’t any better. Senator Ben Sasse (Nebraska) tried to bring his bill prohibiting infanticide to the Senate floor for a vote last night—but it was blocked by Senator Patty Murray (Washington) who called Sen. Sasse’s bill “unnecessary.”

Newly-elected prolife Senator Josh Hawley (Missouri), who was endorsed by Family Policy Alliance in the 2018 election, gave an astounding speech on the Senate floor in support of Senator Sasse’s “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”

We encourage you to watch the whole thing, but we also pulled some of his most compelling quotes:

Citizenship was for the few. The Strong ruled. Most lives, they thought, didn’t matter. This has been the general rule of the ages…The strong prey upon the weak. Individual lives don’t count.

We here in the United States of America hold to a different conviction…Every life matters. We believe, and it is our pride to believe, that every person has dignity and worth. Worth that is not given to them by the strong or the rich. That does not come to them from the state or the city. That does not depend on place of birth or social status. But is theirs by right because of who they are, human beings created in the image of the living God. That is our faith. And against the drift of history, it is a revolutionary creed.

Senator Hawley is right. The pro-abortion crowd has now shown how extreme they are now willing to be. But their extremism has deep roots in the atrocities human beings have committed against each other since the beginning where individual lives—especially those who are weak or vulnerable—have no value.

Thank God ours is indeed a revolutionary faith, and it always has been.

God spoke light out of darkness and life out of nothing. (Genesis 1)

While other faiths demand we earn our way to peace and eternal life, God sent Jesus as the only way to peace and eternal life with Him—knowing we could never earn it.  (John 3:16-18)

Jesus said “blessed are the meek.” (Matthew 5:5)

When others sent children away, Jesus said “let them come to me.” (Matthew 14:13-15)

Jesus turned the whole world upside with 12 ordinary men.

So now the question turns to us, those who have inherited this rich and revolutionary faith:

While the pro-abortion crowd strengthens their allegiance to violence against the most vulnerable, how much stronger will be the resolve of the Body of Christ to stand for Truth in our culture?

Our theme verse at Family Policy Alliance is “the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action” (Dan. 11:32). Our faith is a living faith, just as our God is a living God. We pray you will partner with us to stand firm and take action this year!

And many of you already have! Tens of thousands of emails were sent by you to your Senators asking them to vote for Senator Sasse’s bill to stop infanticide.

Since Senator Sasse’s bill was blocked, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has promised to bring it up again. There’s still time to join us in asking your Senators to support the bill and to urge them to make sure Leader McConnell to brings the “Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act” to a vote!

We’ve made it easy to write your Senators on our Action Center.

TAKE ACTION

May God move us to revolutionary faith,

Did we all watch the same State of the Union Speech?

To watch the news pundits parse each line and put their spin on the President’s remarks—you would be hard pressed to think that we did. To watch a large swath of Congress sit on their hands and at times visibly scowl, is yet another indication that it’s not America first for many, but power first.

Despite the evidence of lower taxes, lower unemployment, more and more businesses providing bonuses, Isis on the run, a budget that increases spending for our neglected men & women in uniform, infrastructure and national security; many left-leaning members of Congress and the media would have us think that we are living in a different and failing world.

Perhaps the victories that went unstated in the State of the Union speech are what really have the Left in a tailspin. Victories for our families such as:

These victories are made possible through your support and engagement, as well as through the many allies working together with Family Policy Alliance across the nation.

Let’s face the facts… America is a divided nation.

It’s why Family Policy Alliance exists and why we will continue to:

Friends, if we are growing tired of the divisiveness in our nation… then we have to act.

Together, we can amplify our voices in the public square. Together, we have the ability to elect leaders locally in 2018 that best reflect our values at the state and national level. Together, we can silence activist courts by requiring that our legislatures reign them in.

Together, through the humility and prayers of the faithful to our Lord and by loving our neighbor as ourselves, our nation can be restored.

Are you in?

Many hot issues are still being debated in Washington D.C., but one thing that’s clear is that President Trump’s administration is keeping his commitment to protect life!

On January 20th, President Trump will have been in office for one year. It’s stunning how much difference that year has made in the fight to protect life and end abortion. In just one year, our country’s leadership has shifted from President Obama who asked God to “bless Planned Parenthood”—an organization responsible for the deaths of 321,384 preborn children according to their latest report—to President Trump who today became the first sitting president to address the annual March for Life live via satellite.

Here’s a snapshot of the important actions protecting life & religious freedom that have been taken at the federal level in one year:

“God bless Planned Parenthood” – President Obama. 2013

“Under my administration, we will always defend the very first right…the right to life.” – President Trump, 2018

What a difference 1 year makes!

“We are grateful that President Trump is serious about protecting life in America. Family Policy Alliance cares about electing prolife leaders and helping pass strong prolife laws in D.C. and in every state of the country because we care about the lives saved—and because each of those lives is an individual loved by and made in the image of our God,” said Paul Weber, President & CEO for Family Policy Alliance on today’s 45th annual March for Life.

Roe v. Wade isn’t the final say on the life issue. Men and women of faith around our country who are committed to taking action will be the final say in protecting life and ending abortion,” Weber concluded.
