If you’re a Republican, you don’t have to support religious freedom. That’s what the Georgia Republican Party decided when it opted against urging candidates for governor to sign a pledge that, if elected, they would sign strong legislation protecting that fundamental right.

So, what do we do when we can no longer count on the party whose platform has traditionally aligned with our values?

Well, we take matters in our own hands. The Georgia Republican Assembly, a conservative organization outside the GOP apparatus, put together a separate pledge, and we at Family Policy Alliance of Georgia went to work getting the candidates to sign it.

And, believe it or not, candidates running for the Republican nomination for the state’s highest office are eager to signal to voters that they support religious freedom.

State Sen. Michael Williams, who has been a strong ally of ours, became the first candidate to sign. He was followed by state Sen. Hunter Hill (who resigned from his position this week), Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, and Secretary of State Brian Kemp – in that order (according to the Georgia Republican Assembly.)

But, are they telling the truth? Did any of them sign this pledge for political reasons, planning to cast it aside once they are in office? Did any of them sign the pledge only because they saw others doing so?

We intend to find out. Already, we are evaluating gubernatorial candidates, as well as those vying for other positions. Make no mistake: if Georgia gets it wrong in 2018, we will continue losing ground to the radical Left at the Capitol.

In the coming weeks and months, we expect to make some endorsements. In the meantime, here’s what I ask of you: Please pray about how you can support our efforts to elect authentic, bold pro-family leaders, and pray for and reach out to the candidates, encouraging them to support our values. Here’s email contact info for the four candidates who signed the religious-freedom pledge:

Michael Williams

Hunter Hill

Casey Cagle
(Facebook page since there is no publicly listed campaign email address)

Brian Kemp

Together, we should pray for these candidates. We can work to hold them accountable, we can also vet each of them and identify the one most worthy of our support, and we can also endeavor to see that leader elected.

If successful, we still will need to hold that new governor accountable and pray the Lord grants him wisdom. If unsuccessful, we will work to partner alongside the victor to hold him to his pledge and empower him to glorify our God in his service to Georgia.

Thank you so much for your support in this effort! 2018 is a pivotal election cycle for our state, and we are so thankful to partner with you.

In His Service,

Cole Muzio
