Senator Heitkamp “high-fives” NY Sen. Chuck Schumer after voting against the 20-week abortion ban.

Senator Heidi Heitkamp has certainly done some good things for North Dakota. She has supported federal legislation related to things like agriculture, funding of Medicare, and Second Amendment rights. I would certainly expect this from a senator representing our state and its values, but this is only one side of her voting record.

On the other side, there are some key issues where Senator Heitkamp has not stood with the people she purports to represent, such as voting for unwarranted preferential treatments for the LGBTQ community that would endanger our wives and daughters, and her lack of support for school choice. Most recently, she voted against the 20-week abortion ban bill in Congress, while a recently released poll showed that only 37% of North Dakotans would have voted with her against the bill.

Despite Senator Heitkamp’s obviously inconsistent representation of our state’s voters, she has also flip flopped (ridden the wind) on certain important issues. Let’s take a recent example.

In a somewhat surprising move, Senator Heitkamp changed her mind and voted to confirm recent conservative Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. She also managed to change her reasons explaining why she voted for him. Senator Heitkamp stated in a CNBC article, “Would he be the judge I’d pick? No, never…but he is the judge that the duly elected president picked.” However, on Twitter and in a press release she stated, “He has a record as a balanced, meticulous, and well respected jurist who understands the rule of law.” So, which is it, Heidi? Did you vote for him because President Trump nominated him or because he has the qualifications to do the job? Riding the wind can be difficult to explain.

Ironically, Judge Gorsuch fundamentally disagrees with her on almost all key issues. However, it just so happens that her support for Judge Gorsuch was preceding an election year when she is going to have a battle retaining her seat in the Senate against challenger Representative Kevin Cramer. The term political expediency comes to mind. She is riding the wind.

What happens now? Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy just announced his retirement and President Trump is expected to declare his chosen replacement nominee by next Monday. It’s very likely that it will once again be someone who agrees with your and my constitutional rights and will support traditional values President Trump has championed in the past. Will Heidi vote to confirm his nomination? Time will tell.

The key question is this. Senator Heitkamp, will you vote your own personal beliefs, some of which are in direct conflict with your North Dakota constituents, or will you ride the wind and vote for someone you don’t believe in for the purpose of political expediency?

There really is no good solution for Senator Heitkamp and the whole nation understands the significance of this race. It’s going to be a tough election and you can count on Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota to be in the thick of it, representing you and your pro-life and pro-family values.

Have you ever thought about the job description for a Supreme Court Justice?

What is it, exactly, that they are supposed to do? In his Stoplight® commentary, Stuart Shepard highlights two distinctly different views.

TAKE ACTION
Ask your senators to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch.

Thank you for sharing Stoplight with your friends.

The confirmation process of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court continues. Judge Gorsuch is exceedingly qualified for the position. He is a strong defender of the Constitution and upholds the same pro-family and pro-life values that you and I hold so dear. What stands in his way is partisan politics. Democrats are doing everything they can to thwart his appointment to the Supreme Court.

It was precisely for this reason that Family Policy Alliance of North Dakota stood together with other partner organizations on March 1st at the Capitol in Bismarck to hold a rally to appeal to Democrat Sen. Heidi Heitkamp asking her to approve Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.

We used that opportunity to strongly advocate that Gorsuch is the right person for this position. Did Senator Heitkamp listen to us? Time will tell. Nevertheless, we stood strong and spoke out for our shared values. We were very pleased that the media carried the story and helped get our message out even more broadly across the state.

That rally and our national efforts toward confirmation of Judge Gorsuch are at the forefront of our current policy issues. Much rests on this decision, not just nationally, but for our state as well.

The first week of April you will have a chance to help us continue this important work. We will be holding dessert banquets in Bismarck April 3rd and Fargo April 4th where we will share more about the work we do and how you can partner with us pro-actively address these and other issues.

Once again, the Benham Brothers will be joining us – this time with a message about standing strong in a culture that is increasingly hostile to our faith beliefs. We sincerely hope you can attend one of these banquets. Attendance is free, but space is limited so we need to hear from you soon.

In addition, any financial support to help sponsor one of the banquets would mean a lot to us as we continue to strengthen and reinforce our presence in public policy and politics here in North Dakota. Both events are co-sponsored by Family Policy Foundation of North Dakota.

You can register for either banquet today.  If you are interested in helping sponsor our events, please email me.

We look forward to working with you to make North Dakota – and the U.S. – a place where families thrive!

Sincerely,

Executive Director

The media is positively in a frenzy over President Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the U.S. Supreme Court. If you listen, you’ll hear all sorts of dubious claims and opinions about his qualifications and suitability for the position. Let me tell you, the facts are clear.

With regard to his academic qualifications, Judge Gorsuch has earned degrees with honors from Columbia University, Harvard Law School, and Oxford University – some of the most prestigious universities in the world. When it comes to experience, Judge Gorsuch was a law clerk for Judges Byron White, Anthony Kennedy, and David Sentelle. He was also the Principal Deputy Associate Attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice and has now served for over a decade on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. He has received many awards and accolades from his peers in the legal profession. His experience speaks for itself.

Let there be no doubt, here is a man that has exceptional academic and professional qualifications for a position on the U.S. Supreme Court.

So, what of his positions on key issues?

Rather than being partisan, Judge Gorsuch is someone who works tirelessly to uphold the original intent of that which Founding Fathers wrote into our Constitution. He understands the power under our Constitution ultimately rests with the American people.

As a result, he has rendered opinions consistent with those pro-family and pro-life values we hold dear as North Dakotans: protection of religious liberties, support of the Second Amendment, defense of freedom of speech, and preservation of Constitutional checks and balances. He is widely recognized for his thoughtful and straightforward decisions on thousands of cases.

It may surprise you that despite his views, some of the most liberal members of the U.S. Senate, Sens. Schumer, Leahy and Feinstein, all supported his confirmation to serve on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In spite of all his academic qualifications and professional accomplishments, Democrats are already fighting his appointment. We can’t let this exceptional legal mind be denied an appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court because of partisan politics.

We need your help to let the Senate know that we support Judge Gorsuch being appointed to the Supreme Court. Please call North Dakota Sens. Hoeven and Heitkamp and let them know you want them to confirm his nomination. Visit our Action Center to get their phone numbers and make your voice heard.

Remember, we are doing this not just for ourselves, but for the generations to come. If we really believe that our values matter, we need to make sure that the highest court in the land reflects those values.

P.S.  In case you missed it, Focus on the Family’s Citizen magazine detailed not only how the elections changed the face of national politics but also of politics right here in North Dakota.

Last February, we mourned the passing of Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative stalwart who fought the reckless abuse of judicial power. We watched as President Obama nominated a liberal judge and we grew anxious as polls and pundits pointed to a likely victory for Hillary Clinton.

But, this week, we have cause for hope.

Our God saw fit to grant an unexpected victory – a president who, though flawed, is sympathetic to our values. He also saw fit to work through President Trump to see the nomination of a judge who, from all appearances, fits the mold of Scalia. Whereas the Court seemed poise to tilt irreparably to the Left, we now have reason for optimism with a Court that is evenly balanced – with the opportunity to move it closer to our Founders’ intent on down the road.

Yet, notice how our God works.

Over the last year, God used the actions of U.S. Senators who stood firm in their conviction to NOT confirm Merrick Garland. He then used the actions of believers just like you who pounded the pavement, gave of their time and treasure and worked hard to elect a president who would appoint the right kind of justice. He used the actions of voters from around the country who demanded change. Finally, God used a man who, just a few short years ago, few could imagine would ever be used in a mighty way to act on behalf of our values.

My friends, our God works through action. While He does not need us, He often chooses to use our prayers and our actions to accomplish His means.

As we kick off our efforts at the Family Policy Alliance of Georgia, I am encouraged to see engaged, thoughtful and active believers throughout our state. I am encouraged to see so many of you who are prayerful and eager to work glorifying our Savior in the public square. And I am hopeful that our actions will transform our state to a place where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive, and life is cherished.

Together, we can take action to see this vision become a reality. I am looking forward to partnering with you – with hope and boundless energy – to glorify our King.

In His Service,

Cole Muzio
