Today marks 239 years since the signing of the United States Constitution.
At the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, Benjamin Franklin was famously attributed with describing what the Founders had created in just a few words:
“A republic, if you can keep it.” 239 years later, that challenge still resonates.
The freedoms we cherish, including the freedom to worship God and live out our faith, should never be taken for granted. Each generation has a responsibility to faithfully steward and defend what it has inherited.
And at Family Policy Alliance, we’re putting that responsibility into action. This Constitution Day, we have some important updates to share about that work.
A Victory for Women’s Sports
This week brought an important development in the fight to protect women and girls.
When proposed federal college sports legislation raised concerns that it could override state laws protecting women’s sports, Family Policy Alliance, alongside our state Family Policy Councils across the country, played a major role in pushing for stronger protections.
Together, we sent a letter to U.S. Senators urging them to protect the hard-won victories already secured in the states. And lawmakers responded, modifying the language to address those concerns and preserve state protections for women and girls.
Our state allies fought hard for these victories. Now, we’re helping protect them in Washington.
50 Years of Protecting Life
That same commitment to faithful engagement is also driving our work to protect life.
Last week, Family Policy Alliance joined pro-life partners on Capitol Hill to co-host a briefing marking 50 years of the Hyde Amendment and its lifesaving legacy.
For five decades, Hyde has protected taxpayers from being forced to fund most abortions through federal programs like Medicaid. We’re grateful for 50 years of Hyde and committed to protecting it for generations to come.
Earlier this month, Family Policy Alliance also joined nearly 40 pro-life and pro-family leaders in calling on federal officials to complete an investigation into Planned Parenthood and bar the organization from receiving federal taxpayer dollars.
Fifty years after Hyde, the fight to protect life continues.
From protecting women and girls to defending life, this is what faithful engagement looks like at Family Policy Alliance.
On Constitution Day, we thank God for the freedoms we’ve inherited and recommit ourselves to faithfully stewarding them for generations to come.
239 years later, the responsibility to “keep it” belongs to us.
