I recently reread a book called The Blueprint, written by journalist Adam Schrager and former Colorado legislator Rob Witwer—a book about how a small group of wealthy progressive, gay activists took over the Colorado legislature and the Governor’s mansion and turned a reliably conservative state into a progressive liberal one in four years.

You have to admire the determination of this very small group of people who dedicated huge personal sums and business acumen to overwhelm their opponents—the pro-family, conservative candidates where voter registration was largely in their favor.

How did they do it?

• Money and lots of it—focused exclusively on progressive candidates’ races where hyper spending could overwhelm the pro-family opponent.
• Mean Media Messaging—well produced, negative ads and videos that misrepresented the pro-family candidates’ records.
• Mobilization—left leaning groups funded to coordinate their constituents toward one goal—winning elections for progressives.

To quote one of the organizing activists; the openly gay, current Governor of Colorado Jared Polis, “It’s simple, you approach it with a business mentality.” His fellow activist, Tim Gill, who is actively expanding the strategy to other states said, “… when others are timid [that would be how he refers to pro-family, conservatives] be bold… I’ve decided to be bold.”
