BREAKING: Kentucky Legislature Overrides Governor to Make #SaveGirlsSports Law
Kentucky is the 15th state with a law reserving school sports competitions for females
Today, the Kentucky legislature overrode the Governor’s veto of their state’s law to Save Girls’ Sports, making Kentucky the fifteenth state to ensure that female school sports competitions are reserved for females.
Meridian Baldacci, Spokesperson for Family Policy Alliance, said:
“Today, the Kentucky legislature has demonstrated what is becoming increasingly clear: Americans support fair sports for female athletes, and they’ll do what it takes to ensure a level playing field.
“The recent news out of the NCAA has reminded America that when males are allowed to compete in female sports competitions, they can and do take championship titles and other elite opportunities that were meant for girls. But Kentucky now joins a growing chorus of states that are protecting female athletes and ensuring they have a level playing field.
“We are grateful for the work of our friends at The Family Foundation whose tireless work and leadership made this important step possible, and we commend the Kentucky legislature for their courageous willingness to stand with female athletes in the Bluegrass State.”
In protecting female athletes, Kentucky joins Idaho (the first state to protect girls’ sports), along with Arkansas, Mississippi, Montana, Alabama, Tennessee, South Dakota, West Virginia, Texas, Florida, Iowa, Utah, Oklahoma, and Arizona. Many of these states, including Kentucky, extend protections for female athletes who have achieved even higher levels of competition at the collegiate level.
Kentucky is the second state this year to override a Governor’s veto in order to protect female sports. Indiana will soon have an opportunity to do the same.
