BREAKING: Kansas Legislature OVERRIDES Governor’s Veto to Protect Minors from Transgender Procedures

New law protects minors from harmful, irreversible “transition”

Today, the Kansas legislature overrode Governor Laura Kelly’s veto of Senate Bill 63, which protects children from dangerous and irreversible “transition” procedures. The law holds healthcare professionals accountable by providing child victims an opportunity to sue for damages.

Governor Kelly had vetoed the Help Not Harm bill on three different occasions in recent years but was overridden today in the Kansas House by a vote of 85-34 and in the Kansas Senate by a vote of 31-9.

Craig DeRoche, President and CEO of Family Policy Alliance (FPA), responded:

“We are thrilled that Governor Kelly’s multi-year efforts to keep gender ideology afloat in Kansas is finally coming to an end. The tide has turned on her, and this vote reflects it.

We are so proud of the Kansas State Legislature and our dear friends at Kansas Family Voice for their heroic multi-year effort to finally ensure Kansas children struggling with who God made them are protected from this harm. They can finally receive the real help they need, and we are so grateful to our courageous allies for their enduring work to protect them.

The tide has definitely turned: at every level, America is waking up to the threat gender ideology poses to our kids. Although this is the latest good news, we at FPA, along with our state family policy council allies, will not stop until every state and the federal government have a Help Not Harm law!”

FPA began work on protecting minors from transgender interventions in 2017, when the group first drafted an early version of what is now the Help Not Harm Act. In 2021, FPA launched its Help Not Harm campaign following the passage of Arkansas’s SAFE Act (the first successful bill in the nation to offer these protections).

To date, 24 states have Help Not Harm-like laws (Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Wyoming).
